Foreword

It has been a great privilege to me to have for so long under my command such a fine formation as the 46th Division, the fighting qualities, the team work and the loyalty which the division has always shown, have been outstanding, and the battle record of the Division will live in history. Lieutenant/General R. L. Mc Creery. K.C.B., K.B.E., D.S.O., M.C.

I joined the Army's RAMC in 1939 (conscription of 20-21 year olds), I did my basic training with 50 other recruits at Borobridge under 147 Field Ambulance RAMC; they were former territorial units from Sheffield.
After basic training we formed the 184Field Ambulance with other NCOs and new recruits from the 147th Field Ambulance, this was to be my unit for the rest of the war. 184 Field Ambulance became the "Medic's" for the 138 Brigade, 46 Infantry Division, which was a North-West Midlands and West Riding Territorial Division, training for both Medical and Field, in both England and Scotland until December 1942.
